Things Change
The community area of Auburn Gresham has changed dramatically over the years, remaining a neighborhood dominated by people of European decent until the 1960s. African Americans moved into the area, and the neighborhood was subject to white flight, or when people of other ethnic groups (specifically European) moved out of the area. Now, 99% of the population of Auburn Gresham is African American alone, as demonstrated by the chart below.
As more African Americans moved in, the crime rate increased, despite being a neighborhood that was better off than some of the surrounding communities such as Englewood. Crime is especially clustered near the neighborhoods north of Auburn Gresham, Englewood and West Englewood. The map below shows the reported violent, property and qualtiy-of-life crimes.
Specific areas in Auburn Gresham are full of newly renovated two-flats and bungalows. This map show the percentage of the population living below the poverty line. The areas with the lowest percentages have high numbers of these bungalows and two-flats. These sections of Auburn Gresham are better known as the middle class neighborhood. Most of these areas are closer to the southern end of Auburn Gresham, near better neighborhoods than ones north of Gresham, namely Englewood and West Englewood.
